dTunes : Update + Installation Issues

(click here for latest dTunes news)

There has been a good response from dTunes. Thanks all for the feedback and comments.

This app was created in just over a day as a concept.

I’ll try and look into a few suggestions later this week. (eg: movies, volume controls, elapsed time, track renaming and possibly syncing).

Installation Issues: There have been a few posts regarding installation issues or uninstalling the app and problems afterwards. Please note that dTunes does not install anything that is connected to Safari, nor does it have any code linked with Seeqpod. You can see this by checking a list of the files installed and their location inside Cydia.

If you have problems with Safari then I would recommend you uninstall the Safari Plugin 2.0. This plugin allows users to download content from the browser. Unfortunately I did not write this code and so cannot comment further. A simple uninstall, and maybe a reboot should fix majority of issues though.

I have also read that you can install “BossPrefs” from Cydia and in there you can turn off the Safari Plugin. This might be a better solution if users want to keep dTunes installed.

Here are a couple of features that I think would be *damn* handy:

1 – The ability to manage the mp3’s similar to the way the iPod software does – in addition to just one long list like it is now. (Group by artist, etc) Reading id3 tags from mp3’s that have them would be great, as would the ability to edit the title/artist/etc (To remove typos, funny characters, etc)

2.The ability to continue playing ‘in the background’ like the iPod can, eg so one can use Safari or check email while music continues to play.

You might want to look into the work Errrick (http://www.errrick.com.ar/) is doing with ISoulSeek – his recent post suggests he is working on a standalone player as an alternative to waiting for the iPhoneOS 2.0 iTunes/iPod DB hash to be hacked, which I think is an excellent idea. You might even consider working with him, or perhaps sharing notes, ideas, etc.

Just one quick additional note – on the background music playing – somehow TuneWiki (wunewiki.com) is able to play in the background, but unfortunately it only plays the same music that is in the iPodDB (but it *isnt* just running the iPod app, its a seperate app).

It would be handy if either the ability to play downloaded songs could be added to TuneWiki, or if dTunes could run in the background.

Hey, really like the app, thanks for all your hard work! Will write a review when I get a free second, will send you a link when I do!

Why don’t add the ability to integrate the downloaded music into the ipod db?

    Killer app.

My request would to be able to be able to use subfolders in the /var/downloads directory – yippee then won’t need windows for getting music onto iphone!!

Thanks for this quality addition to my iphone

    Thanks for the feedback.

I do have some code for keeping the music playing after exiting and this worked during testing but it will not be in the next version as it needs some more testing first.

Currently I cannot access the ID tags which is why you only see the file name.

I have seen the work by Errrick. Please do not think of dTunes as a similar app to his. His program is way more advanced. dTunes only provides playback for media files stored on the device – it has nothing to do with getting the media there in the first place.

    Glad everyone is enjoying it.

I’m hoping to release an update later tonight which includes video – stay tuned.

Yes, I know your app is not similar to errick’s. The point is, his can download music (but not play it as well as the iPod, and cant import it into the iPod due to the sw vers 2.0x changes). Your app is a music player, and has a fairly limited mechanism for downloading music.

My point was, each of your apps could benefit from features in the other. Or you could get together and compare notes, and perhaps put one app together with all the features.

I think an app that could play music like Apple’s iPod app, (and in the background), but that had a more open (eg, *NOT* iTunes) path for actually getting that music onto the phone (either from a PC, or from the web or other sharing site, _without_ using a PC [eg soulseek, seeqpod, fleem, others, or maybe all of them]) would be a ‘killer’ app for jailbroken iPhones.

i have dtunes on my phone, how do i transfer the songs that i downloaded on Dtunes to my ipod or my pc?

  10. You can edit the titles easily in dTunes. The way to do it is when you’re in “Browse” mode, click edit. Once in editing mode, double tap the file you want to modify. This will take you to another screen where you can edit the title and file type of stuff you download. :) Any further questions, please feel free to drop me a line on myspace…
